BACKGROUND.

selkies are mythological creatures that are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land.

born manphe'a rustorsobeliati to selkie parents varorintla'say and smyss'phewarg rustorsobeliati, nina adopted her human name when she was a young child. longing for a life on land, varorintla'say (living under the alias matsya ronan) left her husband with their six-year-old daughter to live among the humans. the pair had nothing but the skin (ie. their seal skin) on their backs. it was on the coast that matsya met one fisherman by the name of seamus collins, who she would later wed.

seamus raised nina as though she were his own ; he was a good man, and a good father. nina attended school like any human child, becoming well versed in their way of life while frequently visiting the ocean, whether to go boating, fish, or play in the sand. however, at fifteen, her mother longed to return to the sea. nina would ultimately refuse to go with her, enjoying her life as it was. they would part ways, and never see one another again as, in her seal form, matsya was killed by a hunter for her skin.

at eighteen, she would leave her father to begin her own journey ; at some point she met and befriended abel elliot, with whom she now shares an apartment with in the city. she found work at a local aquarium, and even has her own mini collection of fish in her bedroom. although never returning to her home, nina's fascination with aquatic life never left her, and she's frequently found to be slipping nautical puns into her everyday speech.
